Things you cannot miss on your trip to Spiti Valley

Spiti valley is a cold desert located in the Himalayas. It stands out from the other Himalayan regions due to its stark landscapes and unique culture. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in India, make sure you visit Spiti Valley at least once in your lifetime. Read along for my recommendations on the best things you can do while in Spiti.

Starry nights

Spiti is located at an altitude of 12,000 feet above sea level. It is literally perched in the sky. This makes the stars and the night sky appear absolutely clear and gives you a visual treat. You can trace constellations and spot the galactic center of the milky way if you are visiting at the right time. Try to keep count of the shooting stars you spot if you can...

The Roads that touch the sky

The roads in Spiti valley are quite beautiful. As you move through the thin tarmac roads amidst the surroundings of giant bare mountains and vast spaces of nothingness, it makes you feel like you are traveling through another planet. In places where you ascend, the roads seem to extend into the sky! Make sure you look out for sightings of animals exclusive to the region.

Monasteries

Monasteries in Spiti are epitomes of Spitian culture—peaceful, joyous, hospitable, and loving in nature. Most monasteries are hundreds of years old; the oldest one, Tabo monastery, is a thousand years old. The fact that they still stand strong is somewhat a miracle, considering the harshness of the terrain. One has to bow down to the architects who built these temples in the sky-literally.
The most important monasteries are- the Key monastery which overlooks the Spiti river, the Dhankar monastery which overlooks the confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers, the Tabo monastery, and the Nako monastery.

Riversides

When you speak of the river, the usual image of gushing streams amidst Himalayan setting might come into your mind. This is a mistake. The river in Spiti-the Spiti river is completely different. If you observe it from a distance, you may feel that these are nothing more than simple streams flowing downhill.
However, as you get closer, you realize how insanely powerful these water bodies are. They are not short of raw power and could sweep you downstream if you dare to venture into them. It is quite an experience to spend a while beside the roaring river, as the clouds play their usual game above the mountains.

Public Transport Ride

Public Transport is very much the artery of these regions. These HRTC buses ply some of the most treacherous roads in the world. You have to experience the ride to really get a feel of what it is like to drive a vehicle full of people through the cliff sides and landslide-prone areas.
Besides, these buses give you a glimpse into the real Spitian essence. People traveling for trade, jobs, students, travelers, foreigners— you never know who you may run into in these buses to Spiti.

Souvenir Hunting

Spiti is a landscape preserved in time. It has an incredible collection of ancient history stored away with it. The valley used to be a part of the Tethys sea a couple of millions of years ago. There are several fossils to be found in the LangzaVillage. Further, you can look carefully near the Spiti river and find stones of different textures and colors. We found stones of almost every color from nearby the river.

Hikes

Hiking is one thing that will get you closer to the landscapes and nuances of Spiti Valley. There is unlimited space to explore in the valley. One of the hikes we undertook was the Dhankar Monastery hike. It was surely challenging, especially with the steep climb, but the view of the confluence of Pin river and Spiti river washes away the fatigue as you reach the top.
