Pullu Padam; a peaceful village in the Heart of Thrissur

Pullu Padam in full bloom; paddy is young and tender green at the beginning of the season

Where?

Situated at a distance of 12.5 kilometers from Thrissur town, Pullu Padam is a beautiful set of paddy fields. It is a part of the Pullu village which is divided into Thekkan Pullu and Vadakkan Pullu. The place has a unique rural personality that makes visiting the place a memorable experience. It shakes you awake to the simple beauties of rural Kerala such as vast green expanses of paddy and several lives who depend on the harvests for a living.

What?

Come here to witness the slow peaceful life of the villagers. Summers will give you a visual treat of vast green oceans. in the monsoon, the place turns into a paradise with water filling up most of the fields making them look like lakes.  The islands and roads will welcome you to the waterlogged landscape. You will stop and appreciate its beauty regardless of the season

Kole farms

The paddy cultivation here is known as Kole farming. In this, the fields remain submerged in water for about 5 months of the year and cultivation is carried out during the remaining part of the year. the major varieties of paddy grown here are Jyoti or Uma.

The waterlogged period is used for fish farming. The water is pumped in about 15 days after the harvest and the fish farming ends shortly before the sowing season. This alternating cultivation helps to eradicate the harmful effects of pesticides and fertilizers. Katla, Prawn, and Rohu are mostly grown in these fields.

Birds

Pullu Padam is a paradise for bird lovers. I have personally spotted several interesting bird species such as Spot-billed Pelican,  Oriental Darter, Black-headed Ibis, and painted stork. there are several more species of birds found here and I will update the information as I continue exploring.

How to Get here?

Coming from Thrissur, take the Thrissur- Kanjany- Vadanappally road and take left from Manakody Auto Stand and continue on that road to reach Pullu. If you are traveling along the Kodungallur- Shornur road, take the road to the right at Palakkal if you are approaching from Thrissur and continue in the same direction until you reach Pullu.

Things to do here

One of the major attractions of Pullu Padam is the attractive local food served here. You can find several Thattukadas near the Pullu Bridge that serve varieties of non-vegetarian meals. There is a huge demand for delicacies, especially towards the evening. It is suggested that you reach here early before sunset to get served quicker and to try varieties of options while enjoying the views around.
